2014-2015 School Improvement Team schedule

The first meeting of the 2014-2015 JVES School Improvement Team will be an all day meeting on Thursday, July 31. Subsequent meetings will be at 3:15 pm in the school media center on the following Mondays: September 15, October 20, November 17, December 15, January 12, February 16, March 16, April 20, and May 18.

The 2014-2015 SIT members are: Laura Abbe, Brooke Atwood, Tammie Beck, Ashley Caldwell, Anita Carreno, Lisa Cleaveland, Lara Ernest, Jane Jenkins, Rachel Jones, April Osborne, Ginger Moore, Heather Hollingsworth, Brenda Wilson, Gina Boyd (parent), Lori Caudle (parent), Marzena Fryman (parent), Lyndon Lowe (parent), Cindy Messer (parent), and Terri McCrary (parent).

Summer Message for Students and Parents

We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer!

As we get ready for the new school year, please be aware that the JVES grade level school supply lists are available at several different stores as well as in the school office.

Teachers will be receiving class lists soon, so students should receive a letter from their new teacher sometime during the week of August 11. Please know that not all students will receive letters on the same day, but if you have not received one by Friday, August 15, you may call the school and find out who the teacher is over the phone.

Our annual Meet the Teacher event will be on Tuesday, August 19, from 3:30-5:30 pm. This is a drop in type event designed so that parents who work until 5:00 can hopefully still have a chance to bring their student to meet his/her new teacher. We request that you not come before 3:30 because teachers need all day on both Monday and Tuesday to get their classrooms ready for the first day with students. If you come early, we will ask you to wait in the lobby until 3:30. Thank you in advance for your courtesy in this matter!

The first official school day for students in grades 1-5 is Wednesday, August 20, and it is a 12:00 dismissal. Kindergarten teachers are now in the process of scheduling home visits and they will explain when each individual kindergarten student needs to begin school during the home visit discussion.

Military Care Package

We have two sisters at JVES whose father is in the military and currently deployed. Between now and Friday, May 16, we will be collecting care package items to send to him and his battalion. The following are items that would best fit this care package:

  • Anything that ships well that reminds them of “home”
  • Baby wipes
  • Chap stick
  • Beef jerky
  • Nuts
  • Crossword puzzles
  • Decks of cards
  • Candy
  • Cookies
  • Gum
  • Magazines (hunting, fishing, cars, sports, reader’s digest, etc.)

We will have a box in the front lobby that says “Military Care Package” in which you can deposit your items. Thanks so much for supporting this family and our military!

School Improvement Team information

The School Improvement Team (SIT) is the umbrella group that oversees the management and coordination of our School Improvement Plan (SIP).

The School Improvement Team’s purpose is to:

  • promote successes
  • monitor progress
  • implement ideas, plans and strategies to bring about increased achievement and partnership.

The SIT team is comprised of classified staff, professional staff, parents, and administrators. This team of dedicated stakeholders has the responsibility for the development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). The School Improvement Plan is developed based on the needs of the students and is an essential component of the school improvement process because it identifies:

  • specific areas of the school which need improvement,
  • staff development and other activities which facilitate school improvement,
  • quantitative and qualitative instruments which measure the extent of school progress in achieving outcomes,
  • areas of continuing concern for future attention.

If you are interested in being on the School Improvement Team ballot for the 2014-2015 school year, please let Mrs. Hollingsworth know either by bringing a note to the office or by sending her an email at hhollingsworth@haywood.k12.nc.us

The deadline for letting Mrs. Hollingsworth know that you are interested in SIT membership is Monday, May 5, 2014.

Title I Distinguished School Celebration

We are excited to announce that we will be celebrating our Title I Distinguished School Award on Thursday, April 10, at 1:30 pm in the gym. Students are writing essays in class about the reasons they love JVES and each grade level will have one essay contest winner. The winner from each grade level will be recorded reading his/her essay and the recording will be shown during the celebration program. Parents, community members, former JVES principals and employees, and any others with an interest in our school are invited to attend this celebration. We look forward to seeing you on this very special day!

Updated HCS calendar

There is a link on this page (under blogroll on the right) for the most recently updated HCS calendar for this school year. The most notable changes are that Good Friday (April 18) is now a school day for students with a 12:00 dismissal and Memorial Day (May 26) is now a regular full school day. Please remember that all testing must be completed in the last ten days of the school year so there is no longer an early dismissal on the last student day (June 13). State End of Grade testing will occur June 2-13 and the final teacher workday is on June 16.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will be held in the media center at Jonathan Valley Elementary on Monday, April 14, at 9:00 am. The entire meeting generally lasts about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. You will receive an information packet, meet the staff, and have an opportunity to tour the school and ask questions. The upcoming kindergarten students are welcome on this day; we let them go to a kindergarten class and join in with this year’s kindergarten students in their activities during the time the parents are in the media center. “Making Memories with Moms (or Dads)” kicks off our spring book fair

We will have our “Making Memories with Moms (or Dads)” event will be on Friday, March 14 from 7am-8am. This will be the kickoff for our spring book fair which will be held the week of March 17-21. More information about the book fair will be coming home soon with your child.

Parent Portal information

The Parent Portal is an opportunity for parents to use our data management system, Power School, as a tool to stay up to date with their child’s grades. Teachers will update the students’ grades on a weekly basis. This program is an option for parents; it is totally the parent’s decision whether to set up a Parent Portal account or not.

You will see links to the following pages: “An Introduction to Parent Portal”, “Frequently Asked Questions”, and “HCS Parent Portal Use Agreement Application for Access”.

If you choose to create an account, you must come to the JVES office and fill out the application(or complete an application and bring it to the office). You will then receive a letter specific to your child that includes your unique parent/guardian access ID and detailed instructions about how to set up an account.

If you try to create an account and are having trouble, please call the school and ask to set up a time where someone can help you and walk you through the process on one of our computers.

Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

Don’t forget that our JVES Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser is coming up soon on Saturday, March 8. It will be held at the Maggie Valley Country Club from 8:30-11:00 am and the cost is $4. Tickets may be purchased by sending money to school in your child’s agenda book or you can stop by the front desk. We will be selling tickets throughout the month of February. The MVCC is giving us 100% of the profit from this fundraiser so please invite your friends, neighbors, and family members to come eat pancakes for Jonathan Valley on March 8.
